My Community Story

Growing up in my family meant we moved every two and a half to three years, at least. However, most of the first ten years of my life were spent living in or visiting College Point, NY. This is the community I identify with. The information referenced here is from A History of College Point, N.Y. by Robert A. Hect

pop Conrad Poppenhusen was one of three major figures in College Point history, and considered to be the most important man to ever migrate to College Point. He was born in Hamburg, Germany and moved New York in 1843 after the Great Fire. In 1854, Goodyear gave Poppenhusen sole rights to his patented hard rubber. Poppenhusen needed to find a location for a new plant, so he chose College Point.
