In 1868, Poppenhusen mistakenly invested in the railroads and consequently went bankrupt. He traveled back and forth from Germany up until his death on December 22nd, 1883. In 1884, a monument was built in Poppenhusen's memory, which read, "To the memory of the benefactor of College Point." The Poppenhusen Institute is still open today, and it is a landmark in the state of New York. |
